An Open Letter to Bill Simmons

Posted by on October 28th, 2010

Honestly, I don’t know if I can blame him.  Bill Simmons took the money, and ran to a better job, a stable job, with stable money and the chance to increase his viewers tenfold.
Who could blame the self-proclaimed “Sports Guy”?
So maybe it isn’t me the wannabe sports writer talking, but the fan of Bill Simmons talking, but I have just one question?
WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED?

Ask any long time Simmons fan and they will agree, he has become a caricature of himself on the four letter network that castrated him all those years ago.
He gave up what made him unique, what made him fun to read, and instead feels the need to go to the same tired material week in and week out to just punch his timecard.
So my questions, as a long time Simmons fan, why?
Was it so you could get your basketball book, which was brilliantly written by the way, done and out to the masses with the appeal of said four letter network behind you?
Was it the knowing where your next paycheck was coming from and not having to worry?
I know if I had that kinda cash waved at me there is no way I would turn it down, so for those that said you sold out, they are damn right, and any of them, including this guy right here, would have done the same.
I guess the reason I ask so many questions that I know will never get answered is this:
As a fan, what comes next when your much talked about contract expires?  Do you go back to free lancing and rekindle that sports writing savant that you once were?  Do you go back to the Bill Simmons that is a daily must read?
Here are some of you fans with questions for you, and as always, these are real questions from real readers:
Why didn’t your voice change during puberty? John from Cincy

What character from The Karate Kid most resembles your ugly dog? Turner from Glendale, CA

Why didn’t you let your wife pick your games in the Vegas SuperContest? My wife

Could the Red Sox put out a team that would not make you optimistic to start the year? Say, if it was the Pirates in Boston uniforms? All NY Yankees fans

Why haven’t you done a ranking scale for your ranking scales yet? Your NFL system could be a 1, your levels of losing could be a 1, your revenge factor scale could be a 1, wait….I answered my own question, didn’t I? K.M. from who knows where

Why do you feel it’s fit to write something, then admit NO ONE DENIES THIS? Doesn’t that make it too trivial to print? Seth from AZ

Is Danny Woodhead the Patroits’ Pedroia, or is Dustin Pedroia the Red Sox’s Woodhead? Bryan from Boston

Seth Cox
