Another quiet weekend with few upsets in College Football sets the stage for a fantastic weekend of Football around the country. No place is better to get you up to date with who belongs where in the rankings than here at the Sports Headquarters. K.M Venne and I return to break down not the BCS top 15, not the coaches or AP Top 15, but the ACTUAL Top 15. This isn’t called the Superior Systems Rankings because of its lack of effort. We bring you the goods and analysis you didn’t think were possible.
You may not agree with us, you may not understand us, but you damn sure will be entertained. This is your SSR for the week of November 22nd…
1. Oregon Ducks- 30 points (Bryan: 1st, K.M: 1st) Last Week- 1st
Bryan: On a bye this week, not a ton to say here. Stanford rolling Cal the way they did makes me raise an eyebrow at Oregon’s performance in Berkeley last week. Nonetheless they are unbeaten, still are the best team to me in CFB, and have two winnable games left so its a good time to be a Duck fan. Looking to see how they handle the last home game coming off a bye this week. They’ve been known in the past to gag up big opportunities and this is another opportunity they have in front of them. There’s a strong possibility that they could play Boise in the national title, one season after their memorable game with them last year. Keep winning and you’ll stay in my Top 2 spots. Make me look bad and I will not be kind to you Oregon.
Trending: None. Like I said, two games left that they should win. Can’t picture them losing their last home game on Senior Night. Oregon St. finally had a pulse today but they still won’t be at 100% without James Rodgers. I still have the Ducks playing for the title.
K.M: If you were my #1, and you have a bye, and #2 has a bye, and #3 has a bye, then you are probably going to stay #1. Oregon continues to be the best team in the land, next in action Friday night when they host U of A. I’ve been feeling for a while now that the Wildcats have a great shot to pull a surprise upset, and Vegas agrees with me…that it would be quite the surprise if Arizona beats Oregon, at least. The Ducks come in at 17.5 point favorites to remain secured in a top 2 BCS spot, which I guess if I was going to keep making my Arizona upset case, I could say is a good way to be disrespected and not get a good week of practice for. Am I going to scream to the high heavens right now that Arizona is going to shake the college football world to it’s very core and drop a loss on the Ducks? No. But I’m going to make it very clear that I could totally see it happening. And I’ll bet it to happen, because the payout is going to be very high. Arizona has a shot. Don’t just ignore the game on Friday. Not like you were going to be doing anything on the 26th anyway, so watch this game, see if a battle develops.
Trending: Depends on how right I am. Win out, and they will stay in my top 2 without question. Lose, and I don’t foresee how they can move back into my top 2. It would take an insane confluence of events for the Ducks to remain top 2 if they lose a game, I couldn’t even put Wisconsin behind Oregon if the Ducks falter down the stretch. I still swear, undefeated Oregon, national championship game participant Oregon, none of this makes sense to me. I’ll believe Oregon is going to play for the national title when I see it with my own two eyes.
2. Auburn Tigers- 28 points (K.M: 2nd, Bryan: 2nd) Last Week- 2nd
K.M: IRON BOWL! IRON BOWL! IRON BOWL! Who is jacked for the Iron Bowl? THIS GUY. Let me tell you bastards a story, since Auburn was on a bye last week. When I was a kid, I LOVED Terry Bowden’s Auburn. I was evolving as a sports fan in middle school, I was always a Miami fan as a kid (which used to be f ing awesome…), but I used to also follow the Badgers, since I was born in Wisconsin. I moved around, and settled right outside SEC country, and Auburn and Terry Bowden was my team. I was pissed when he got fired (he was fired in my world), but I still followed Tuberville’s team a bit. I loved the Iron Bowl, and I hated Alabama. Times change, I found myself a fan of Houston Nutt’s Arkansas soon after Bowden left, then LSU and the grass eating tool named The Hat stole my heart. Hey, why have loyalty to your second favorite team? Just cheer for who you like, but I suggest picking an SEC team, it puts you in the center of the college football world.
But still, the Iron Bowl holds a place dear to my heart. The Iron Bowl is awesome, because it tends to be a really good gam far more often then not. I find myself as a fan cheering against my once beloved Tigers here. Both because Alabama is a quality team I enjoy more, and also to help my new Tigers. Roll Tide? Never thought I’d say that a few years ago…
Trending: Down, assuming the Tide does indeed roll. By the way, all this talk that a one loss Auburn team might still be in the national title picture? Stupid. These Cam Newton allegations are going to ensure that Auburn’s path to the national title is only one road, winning out.
Bryan: Same as Oregon, bye, not a ton to say. Resume’ is still strong with wins over Arkansas and LSU as well as respectable OOC slate. Teams been getting by all year on the dominance of Cam Newton. We’ll see what happens this week. Honestly, is anyone not amped for the Iron Bowl this year. Though it had NC implications last year and was a great game, the teams weren’t equally as strong last year as they are this year. I think its going to be a great matchup. The allegations that keep being rumored make me hope even stronger that Auburn goes down as we already had a fraudulent champion this decade, we don’t need another if he’s eventually found to be in violation of some sort. Their defense this year has been porous to say the least and I think Bama’s going to put up some points in this one. Certainly a better resume’ than Oregon so no issue with anyone who thinks Auburn is the best.
Trending: Down. I got Alabama in the Iron Bowl this year. Been saying it for months. If Auburn does find a way to win, they could possibly lose to SC in the SECCG who played them tough last time. I think Auburn is a long shot to make the NCG. Interesting question would be, could they lose to Bama, beat SC, and still play for the title? One-loss SEC champ or Non-AQ unbeaten? I don’t think that answer is cut and dry.
3. TCU Horny Frogs- 25 points (Bryan: 4th, K.M: 3rd) Last Week- 3rd
Bryan: Might be a BCS-less season for TCU this year with all the quality BCS schools available for at-large spots. On a bye this week with people already penalizing them last week for a poor performance (in their eyes, not mine) and Boise winning big over a good team, its almost a given Boise will leap them tomorrow. Add in Utah’s slide at the end of the year, and Baylor falling out of relevancy and TCU really has no marquee win on their resume’ anymore, especially none even close to Boise’s win over VT. To top it off, they get New Mexico to end the year, a game that will only hurt their computers number. This team is still the best Non-AQ in my opinion and is good enough to beat any team in the country but this year they will draw the short straw in the race for the one guaranteed BCS spot. Could see them playing some middle-tier bowl game against an overmatched opponent. Not a good time to be a fan of the Horny Frogs.
Trending: None or Down. They’re going to beat New Mexico. Only chance they drop is if LSU wins convincingly over Arkansas. LSU already has a great slate of wins and adding another top win to it could force me to bump them over TCU. Wisconsin could possibly pass them but thats less likely. Got love for you TCU. I know how good you are, but this year your just not getting the breaks you need to stay in the Top 4.
K.M: TCU had an off week, and are done playing real teams. They finish the season on Saturday by beating New Mexico by 50. Will Boise pass TCU in the BCS after they beat Nevada like they probably will? I don’t think so, unless Boise looks dominant. I don’t think Boise can really gain that much in the computers. Time will tell, I guess. One thing time has already told is that TCU is going to put a epic beating on New Mexico and remind everyone they are pretty damn good.
Trending: Either up or level or down, depending on the two big SEC games this week. It could go any number of ways…but it’s pretty much out of TCU’s hands. They’ll make their statement, of that I am certain.
4. Boise St. Broncos- 24 points (K.M: 5th, Bryan: 3rd) Last Week- 4th
K.M: Huge game for Boise State…Nevada is a decent opponent, however Vegas set Boise State as over a 2 TD road favorite. So that is what I’m going to hold the Broncos to. 14 point will be an average performance. Kill Nevada by more, and I’ll start singing a different tune about this team. Anything less, and this team has no chance of earning my respect. Those are the rules I have made up in my head, so it is now written, so it shall come to pass. Quote the K.M., nevermore. My father’s parents actually live in Boise. I don’t want to come off like a giant Boise hater, I don’t intend to me. And I don’t hate Boise because I hate the BCS or anything, I actually like the BCS, because I truly believe it usually crowns the right champion. But I know Boise State isn’t the champion of this season. I got two eyes. I can watch football. This is a quality football team. But it’s not top 2, and that’s not arguable for me right now. Now, kill Nevada by a ton, and some other teams stumble, and maybe they really will be top 2. It’s possible. But they got a lot to prove to me. Other teams have been proving more to me this year, and Boise’s just about out of time. Put up, and put up big, or shut up, blue turf people. That’s my feeling on this team.
Trending: Perhaps a bump given the tough games for a couple teams above them.
Bryan: Told you it was coming. Just couldn’t deny it anymore as much as it pains me to do. Boise was going to pass TCU. I’ll be surprised if they don’t jump TCU again in the BCS tomorrow. While everything is going right for Boise right now, everything is going wrong for TCU. They got killed publicly for that close win over SDST which as I told you last week was stupid because they were coming off an enormous road win and SDST is a good team. Expecting them to win that by 30 was unrealistic. Boise crushed a respectable Fresno team on Friday Night and with VT cotinuing to win, its just making that win look bigger and bigger. Add in they get another Top 25 team on their schedule now in Nevada, and there’s no way an unbeaten Boise gets passed over if one of the two big boys slip up at the top. And thats a shame because Im a firm believer they belong nowhere near the title game. Resume’ is looking better each week and given I think VT will beat whoever they play in the ACCCG (FSU or NCST), they will own a “neutral field” win over a BCS conference champ. Tough for TCU to overcome that.
Trending: Up. I don’t care what Nevada has done. I don’t see them beating Boise. In fact if Boise does make the title and play Oregon, they just might win it. And that would be unreal. This team will be unbeaten. I hate to admit it but its true. The only light at the end of the tunnel with this is maybe it pushes us closer to a playoff. Thats the only good I can see coming from this.
5. LSU Tigers- 22 points (Bryan: 6th, K.M: 4th) Last Week- 5th
Bryan: For the 3rd week in a row, not much change at the top of my ballot. Why the hell does LSU CONSTANTLY struggle with bad teams. Seriously, Houston Nutt must keep his jobs on the LSU game each year as he almost always has the Mad Hatter’s number. I watched this same Ole Miss team get bent over the week before by a porous Tennessee team. Then again LSU struggled to beat Tennessee too so maybe I shouldn’t have been that surprised. There’s still no reason an offense as mediocre as Ole Miss’ (41st overall, 83rd passing) should be able to put up 36 points on one of the most talented defenses in all of college football. Im just gonna chalk this one up to a team looking ahead to a big rivalry game, but for a team with o so slim National Championship hopes, it certainly wasn’t the type of effort I wanted to see. And if Stanford had one marquee win on their resume’ I probably would have bumped them over the Tigers this week. Looking at the BCS standings today, though its highly unlikely, LSU is in somewhat of striking distance of Boise who if they win less than impressively vs. Nevada, or even lose, and Auburn goes down, LSU could be back in the thick of it, but I’d still put that as a long shot. This team still stands a very strong chance of getting an at-large BCS spot if Auburn goes to the national title, and if they get by a rising Razorbacks squad this week.
Trending: Toss-up. I’m really torn on their game at Arkansas this week and don’t want to give anything away before the Sexy Six since Im still only about 51% confident in my feeling on the game right now. A win over Arkansas and they probably jump TCU and maybe Wisconsin in my ballot. A loss and they’ll still be in, but around 10-11. They’ll end the year in the SSR regardless of what happens this weekend. Very good football team. Just wish they were more consistent.
K.M: Listen, Houston Nutt upsets a team every year. Just this year, he forget to finish the deal. LSU got a game from Ole Miss, the Running General Ackbar’s gave LSU quite the time, but I’m not going to hold that against LSU. Why? Mostly because I am told from others that I am very bias and love LSU (the latter is for sure true). But also, like I said, this is what Houston Nutt teams do. Unless you were born yesterday, you have seen Giggity (Houston Nutt’s nickname via EDSBS for those of you who arn’t internet awesome like me and didn’t know that. Also, if you don’t read EDSBS, you need to to stay awesome or become awesome. Figured I’d plug the best college football blog ever one time this year.) Let’s be honest, Ole Miss played a great game last Saturday. It wasn’t like Ole Miss laid an egg and LSU also played bad but won. Ole Miss played great football, and LSU had to beat a team that was playing far better then their record indicated, and did so. That was a good Ole Miss team that LSU beat. Yes, that sounds stupid to say that. But it’s true. If you say the game, you know it. LSU stays #4 in my world, and now has a hell of a test going to a very good Arkansas team that just got a good win vs. a very good Mississippi State team. If LSU beats Arkansas, they are without question the best 1 loss team in the land, period. And if someone falters up top, LSU deserves consideration for playing for the national title, because they have a resume that is pretty much unparalleled, and a fine squad, too. LSU/Arkansas is going to be awesome this Saturday. I am jacked up.
Trending: Win, and get some help, and who knows how high I will put them. Lose, and they will drop, but not too far, because Arkansas is a quality, quality opponent, and LSU still has one hell of a resume.
6. Wisconsin Badgers-21 points (K.M: 6th, Bryan: 5th) Last Week- 6th
K.M: I called them a good team last week. They are a very good team. They covered a possible trap game in Michigan by beating the tar out of the Wolverines, which really is hard to brag about, but hey, Vegas seemed to indicate it was an upset situation, but instead Wisconsin told Michigan where to be. So I’ll give them a touch more credit then I should, just because Wisconsin trounced a team that Vegas seemed to think had a shot, even if nobody else believed in them. As I’ve been saying, Wisconsin/Stanford would be a really good Rose Bowl. But Wisconsin, like Boise, may have slightly bigger dreams, some serious chaos up top and maybe Bucky has a claim to playing for it all. This is another problem Boise faces in my world. If things to break just right for Boise, they break just right for Wisconsin too. I think BSU is better right now. But I swear, if Boise gets a game out of Nevada, even if Nevada wins, Wisconsin may well jump them in my standings next week. These two teams are close in my world right now. if Boise slips, Wisconsin can take advantage of that to me.
Trending: See Boise
Bryan: An impressive win without their best RB again, the depth of Wisconsin is really starting to impress me. Or it could have just been Michigan’s defense. On 2nd thought, thats probably what it was. Team is in GREAT shape to win the Big Ten tiebreaker by virtue of the highest BCS ranking. Great home win over Ohio St. Great road win over Iowa. And a respectable road loss to MSU. A complete resume’ in my mind, and the thing I like to see is they punish the teams they should. Unlike MSU, they aren’t letting bad teams hang around. They would be the best representative in my opinion for the Big Ten in the Rose Bowl. Basically as long as Ohio St. doesn’t gag vs. Michigan at home then the Badgers probably just need to win this week to end up as Big Ten champs. Either that or a Michigan State loss. Either would do. I don’t see anyway that Ohio St. would pass them in the BCS for beating a bad Michigan team. Wisconsin is pretty much in “just-win” mode and let everything else take care of itself. Man, how great would a Wisconsin-Stanford Rose Bowl be.
Trending: Up. They probably move up next week if Auburn goes down like I expect. I don’t think Northwestern could beat Wisconsin in Madison in 10 tries with Persa, let alone without him now that he’s out for the year with a ruptured ACL. And did you see the Northwestern rush D this past weekend? Not a good tuneup for the Badgers. Wisconsin is all but a lock for Pasadena.
7. Ohio St. Buckeyes- 18 points (Bryan: 7th, K.M: 7th) Last Week- 7th
Bryan: Well a very good game vs. Iowa that had people in Wisconin breathing heavily as a Buckeyes loss would have screwed them. Terrell Pryor made a few key plays when they were most needed, specifically the conversion on 4th and 10 that kept their Rose Bowl hopes alive. Probably need a Wisconsin loss which is highly unlikely as I can’t see them getting ahead of Wisconsin in the BCS if both win. They have a good chance at an at-large BCS berth. Most likely to the Sugar to play maybe LSU if Auburn makes the title. Resume’ to this point just isn’t very impressive. Lost to the Badgers. Didn’t play Michigan State. Pretty much their best wins came against teams with 3-4 losses minimum. Reason I have them over Stanford is because neither has a great win and I think Ohio St. is a FG better on a neutral field. But I’m fine with anyone who thinks Stanford should be ahead of Ohio St. They certainly have been impressive as well.
Trending: Probably up or neutral. Don’t see anyway they lose to Michigan and hell if they do lose at home I might not have any use for them and could just throw them out next week. They should win this game by about 3 scores.
K.M: Terrell Pryor left me wishing for much more last week, but credit to him, he got the job done in Iowa City, he had plenty of chances to win that game, but he did seize the last one. It was a big win that puts Ohio State into the BCS at-large picture somewhat. OSU gets to end the season by winning The Game That Sucks by like 4 touchdowns. I’m sure their fans will enjoy that a lot. I won’t really care, beating Michigan in your building isn’t that cool.
Trending: Not very far.
8. Stanford Cardinal- 16 points (K.M: 8th, Bryan: 8th) Last Week- 8th
K.M: Fun fact, I suck at spelling the world Cardinal. I keep wanting to put the a before the i, it just never looks right, and I have to look it up every week. This fact is fun, because talking about Stanford locking up Cal in the equipment shed like they are the son of an ESPN analyst is not fun (What’s this? I’m getting a text from the year 2009. It says: *high five*! TOPICAL BURN MAN!. Thanks, the year 2009!). Stanford is too well coached and too talented to lose to teams that lack talent. That is just fact. A fact that bodes poorly for Oregon State’s trip to Palo Alto this week. Stanford is going to lock up their position in line for the Rose Bowl as long as Oregon wins out by beating the Beavers badly. In fact, they will beat the Beavers so badly, they will earn the nickname Ike Turner (Hold on, I’m getting a telegram from the year 1976. It says. HIGH FIVE. STOP. TOPICAL BURN. STOP.)
Trending: They will be the beneficiary or causality of other games this week and move in either direction depending on what other teams do.
Bryan: You certainly caught my eye this week Stanford, blowing out a Cal team who gave Oregon all they could handle last week. Nonetheless, it is a rivalry game, and Cal certainly had to be a bit deflated after letting the game last week get away from them. Hard for me to push you guys much when you really don’t have any signature wins on your schedule. I overranked Arizona so that win doesn’t do a ton for me, you stuggled to beat USC who isn’t a very good team, and you got blitzed by Oregon. Don’t get me wrong, you are a damn good football team, but like Boise, if you don’t have a signature win, and hell I’d argue you don’t even have one as good as VT, then how much credit can I give you? I can’t give you much. Just play out your season, keep winning big, and we’ll see where you end up. Realistically you should kill Oregon St. who is having a miserable year and really just wants to put together one great game against Oregon and try and ruin their rivals title hopes. The interesting thing I’ve heard today is the Rose Bowl is leaning towards taking one of the Non-AQ’s if Oregon and Auburn playing for the title which would likely leave you guys hanging dry in the BCS and that would be a shame. But hey when you lose by 21 in your one tough game of the year, I can’t feel too bad for you. Ya know?
Trending: None. Beating a bad Oregon St. team by 100 or 1 won’t matter. They’re likely staying put, maybe dropping depending on how Oklahoma St. plays Oklahoma. But your resume’ is pretty much closed for improvement at this point Stanford.
9. Oklahoma St. Cowboys- 13 points (Bryan: 9th, K.M: 10th) Last Week- Tied-1oth
Bryan: Well nothing gained from this weekends win over Kansas. It just allowed you to move up as Nebraska went down. Never realized just how mediocre the resume’ was until I took another look at it. Close win over Troy. Sqeeked by a Texas A&M team (albeit on the road) who wasn’t nearly as good with Johnson at QB as they are now. Lost to Nebraska at home. And otherwise have beat up on mediocre Big 12 teams. Even the Baylor win which at the time I thought was very good, now looks average at best as Baylor has been thumped by most other strong Big 12 teams. And despite all that you have a winner-take-all game this weekend. Yes, I know Texas A&M could make it a 3-way tie, but lets be serious people. If Texas A&M is behind both these teams right now, how in the world could they possibly pass the winner of the OU-OSU game by beating Texas. Simple: they won’t. So the winner of Oklahoma-Oklahoma St. is going to the Big 12 title game to play in all likelihood Nebraska who if they find a way to lose to Colorado at home should have their BCS conference title stripped. You have big brother in your building, with a chance to go play for the Big 12 title. Could you ask for any more?
Trending: Again, like Arkansas-LSU, I don’t want to give anything away (unlike the Auburn-Alabama game that I’ve been giving my opinion for months) in my pick for the Sexy Six so let me just say that with this resume’ and a game at home, unless its a thriller, then a loss this weekend and I probably boot you next week. Win and I will be generous because Oklahoma has looked very good of late.
K.M: Last week I jumped OSU over Nebraska despite them both winning. I was proven right on that one, as OSU did what it does, beat the hell out of a bad team, and Nebraska was who I thought they were, pretty lame. This week, despite my ranting about the Big 12 being junk, I jump OSU over MSU despite both winning. MSU had to hold on for dear life at home vs. Purdue. OSU I think right now is the better team. Bedlam is a big game for OSU, but really, what kind of a bump can I give the Cowboys for a win? This is the only Big 12 team I have any respect for. I love the attack, great RB, great QB, and Justin Blackmon is just a stud. He’s almost A.J. Green good, and that’s impressive. Bedlam is going to be a tricky game, if OSU wins, and gets revenge on Nebraska in the Big 12 title game, OSU may earn more respect from me. But given how bad the conference is, I can’t go any higher yet. I hope this team makes a BCS game that is good, because honestly, this team deserves to have a legit test, we as college football fans should really want to see what Okie State can do vs. a solid, legit team. I’m hoping for it, not just because I feel I was one of the first on this team’s bandwagon, but because I am a fan of interesting football.
Trending: Can’t go much higher, could go out of my top 15 if they lose to a Oklahoma team I don’t respect.
10. Alabama Crimson Tide- 12 points (K.M: 9th, Bryan: 11th) Last Week- Tied-1oth
K.M: Alabama beat Georgia State down, which is near the top of the list of “Things that it would have been impossible for them not to happen this college football season”. It was just a token warm up game for the Iron Bowl, which is a good move, because Auburn, like 5 other SEC teams before Alabama, took a bye before the Iron Bowl, so it’s only fair that Alabama takes a de facto bye. The Iron Bowl, as I have talked about, is going to rule. On more Alabama centric stuff, I get to keep them #9, because I never had them over teams like Nebraska to start with. Which isn’t a shot at my colleague, who did, it’s just my cause, that Nebraska, and to a larger extent the Big 12, is totally terrible, which is my new #1 cause in the college football world for this season. The Big 12 does not deserve your respect, they prove it time and time again every week. Alabama has been chilling here at #9 for me for a while, but that is going to change, because they for sure are going to jump Stanford if they beat Auburn. I’m sorry, but even Stanford, a team I really like, can’t compete with Alabama in my world if they win the Iron Bowl. OSU might even suffer the same fate, because deep down, I know damn well which team is better. And if Auburn wins the Iron Bowl, a 3 loss Alabama team will be hard to justify in my top 15. It’s going to be interesting to see the Iron Bowl’s aftermath.
Trending: Somewhere that isn’t #9, that’s all I know.
Bryan: Alright, Im barely wasting any time on you guys this week. You beat a FCS school who clearly couldn’t match up athletically with you pretty much anywhere. Thats really all there was too this. Your win over Arkansas is looking better to me as my opinion of them continues to grow but outside that you really don’t have any significant wins. One good loss to LSU which I can’t fault you too much for, and a tough loss to South Carolina who Im still higher on that most. Nows the real one. I’ve been calling you guys for this game for months. In your building. Chance to beat your arch-rival and maybe ruin their season. This would be a signature win that I could point to in order to justify putting you back in my my Top 10. I know you guys are a very good team. My colleague knows it. And we believe in you. Lets just not make us look foolish. No I won’t fault you a ton…..actually screw it, at home, you better win this damn game. Auburn’s D couldn’t stop a fluterring feather at this point. And your weakness, the secondary, isn’t their strength. They plan to run all over you like they did LSU. I expect you won’t let that happen.
Trending: Up over a few teams after they beat Auburn. Its in Bryant-Denny. I got your backs Bama. Don’t do to me what Arizona and Iowa have. Have you noticed Oklahoma has yet to make it back to my rankings after the A&M loss?
11. Michigan State Spartans- 10 points (Bryan: 10th, K.M: 12th) Last Week- Tied-10th
Bryan: Man, LSU Jr. Why do you guys constantly fail to beat up on the bottom-dwellers in your conference? Purdue is a 4-7 team. They had no business being in the position they were against you. This team is limping to the finish line and frankly there’s two-three teams I have ranked behind MSU that I think beat them, but Im being fair because they only have one loss. In all likelihood this team has no BCS shot. As I said before, your not going to catch either of the two in front of you which means you need Ohio St. to lose. Wisconsin means nothing yo you. Regardless of what they do, you need your in-state rival to help you out and I don’t see it. Looking at probably a Capital One Bowl maybe if you don’t get the help. But unfortunately for you, you lost late. Frankly, Im not convinced you guys can go to Happy Valley and win. I know my colleague thinks nothing of Penn St. but it wouldn’t surprise me to see them knock you off. Which really matters little. Wisconsin is going to the Rose Bowl in all probablility. Great season. Bet you’d give anything to have that Iowa game back, though Im not sure if you played them again tomorrow that it’d be any different.
Trending: None or down. If they lose, it will be a toss-up with other losers this week who I keep. Teams like Oklahoma St., Alabama, etc. that are close to the bottom of my ballot as well have much tougher games than MSU so MSU might be the first to go on my list if they slip up. This is a team I thought was a really good team but lately I’d just chalk them up as a decent team who got hot early and since has been far from impressive.
K.M: Sparty, you were sad last week. I evoke on you a one week penalty of compliments about your team. SUFFER MY GIRLISH SILENT TREATMENT.
Trending: Probably just about here after everything shakes out. They lost a lot of good will last week.
12. Arkansas Razorbacks- 9 points (K.M: 11th, Bryan: 12th) Last Week- 13th
K.M: Yes, Arkansas is jumping Michigan State as well. Arkansas deserves it. Arkansas had to grind to beat Mississippi State on the road in 2 OT’s, but hell, that was a very good game, both teams made a couple mistakes, but both made some very big plays as well, and a win in Starksville vs. a very well coached and touch MSU team deserves praise. I almost put this team #10, but I think OSU is slightly better. You know what? Arkansas/Okie State would be an AWESOME Cotton Bowl. I really want to see that happen. Hey football gods: My team sucks, we turn it over 6 times at Virginia Tech, we are pathetic. This season brings me little joy. Please grant me this wish. Thank you.
Trending: Down, but probably not out if they can hang with LSU. Probably out if LSU handles them. Up a fair bit if they get LSU at home, despite the fact they are the favorite, that’s still a beastly win for the Razorbacks.
Bryan: A gritty win in a tough venue to play, my opinion of the Razorbacks continues to grow each week and could take another big boost if they can find a way to beat LSU at home this weekend. Despite two losses, they are to two of the 10 best teams in the nation in my mind and in both games they were very competitive (and anyone who watched the Arkansas-Auburn game would know that). A good OOC win over Texas A&M, though like I said before, that wasn’t the same A&M team whose been on fire lately. By all accounts could have lost this weekend but the D made a nice stand late to keep Mississippi St. out of the endzone after the fumble. Mallet and the Arkansas WR core have been very impressive all year, Mallet with the potential for a 4000 yard season after the bowl game. They have a TINY window of at-large BCS hope in my opinion if they beat LSU and Auburn beats Bama. But I wouldn’t give it more than about a 5% chance. Nonetheless should be rewarded with a very good bowl game. Play in the toughest divison in all of college football by a landslide. At home this weekend, they have a chance to make one last statement to the bowl representatives.
Trending: Either way up or out. At 12 right now, there’s a good chance that even as good as LSU is and it wouldn’t be a terrible loss by any means, that they would have trouble staying in my SSR with 3 losses to the 3 best teams they played. They have a good resume’, not a great one, and Im not positive I can stomach a 3rd loss for this team. Win and they are in my Top 10 next week no questions asked.
13. Virginia Tech Hokies- 6 points (Bryan: 13th, K.M: 13th) Last Week- 14th
Bryan: Like I told you all in the Sexy Six this past weekend, VT is flying under the radar and I’d give them a good chance against Arkansas, Michigan State, or Oklahoma St. on a neutral field tomorrow. One stop at the end of the Boise game and your looking at the #3 team in the BCS Standings right now I firmly believe. A good team would have fumbled the game at Miami this past weekend, knowing they would roll their rival at home. A very good team would say “F that”, beat the daylight out of a decent Hurricanes football team, and take the Coastal Division on the road. The resume’ isn’t great, especially with the down year the ACC is having (again), but road wins at UNC, Miami, and NCST are good wins in my eyes. Played Boise very tough and probably should have won that game. Just waiting to see if they’ll have a rematch with NCST or if Florida St. will be their opponent.
Trending: Up. They’ll beat Virginia and I don’t think anyone in the ACC Atlantic stands a chance on a neutral field vs. Va Tech. As a Clemson fan, I’ve seen all the Atlantic has to offer and none of their potential opponents are as good as Virginia Tech. They’ll stroll to the Orange Bowl 11-2.
K.M: The saddest thing about the Hokies win over the U last week is the U pretty much outplayed the hell out of the Hokies for 3 quarters, but seemed to have an odd fascination with turning the ball over and running the ball up the gut on 4th and 1, when anyone who watches Hokies football knows the Hokies sell out on the dive on 4th and 1 like it’s the only play that you are allowed to call. Randy Shannon is a terrible coach who needs to be fired, not just without pay, but fired and sued for the pay he’s already received. I would take nearly any coach over him right now. Phillip Fulmer? Yes, and I have such little respect for him. Michael Irvin? He’d run the program into the ground, but it would be awesome. Brad Childress? No. He’s somehow worse.
Anyway, the Hokies won the Coastal. Congrats. And it looks like they will get to duck Florida State, which is a shame for me, because Florida State OWNS the Hokies, always has. Hokies will beat Virginia by 4 scores like they do every single year and then handle NCSU again in the ACCCG, which will shatter attendance records by hitting 4,000 people this year, then probably get to play Big East “champion” (as if anyone is a champion in that conference) and win out, and become highly ranked heading into next season, just like they are every year, and then the Hokies will somehow lose to Appy State to open next year, and the entire cycle will somehow continue. It’s so damn annoying as a Miami fan. Grrrrrr.
Trending: Right about here, because I don’t respect the Big 12 enough to rank 2 teams from it, so who is going to pass them?
14. South Carolina Gamecocks- 3 points (K.M: 14th, Bryan: 15th) Last Week- 15th
K.M: Bryan was dead right about South Carolina being #15 last week when I couldn’t decide who deserved the spot. The SEC East champs have the bad loss against Kentucky, but still have the big win vs. Bama, and bottom line, they are a talented football team. Tons of offensive talent, even if it’s sometimes self destructive, and a solid resume in the best conference in college football. I tip my cat to Bryan for being on the right answer a week before I could see it.
Trending: Clemson on the road is a semi-tough game, but the Gamecocks should handle it, and then South Carolina could make a fair amount of noise if they get a win over Auburn. So up for a bit, then up some more or back out.
Bryan: You guys came in at 15 on my ballot last week and pummled Troy. Realistically that’s not a big deal but as impressive as Oklahoma was on Saturday, and as tempted as I was to move them ahead of you, I can’t. Oklahoma doesn’t have a win that sniffs your Bama win. And you guys still have some left from your dominant win at Florida that Im keeping in the back of my mind. Looking forward to the SECCG, especially if Auburn escapes Bama, as I think you guys would have a puncher’s chance in that game. Even moreso if Auburn loses Friday. Just go easy on my Clemson Tigers this weekend will ya? Hopefully we catch you guys looking ahead.
Trending: None. My Clemson Tigers suck so Im not worried about SC going down this weekend even though it is in Death Valley. Depending on the SECCG you’ll either be out or up a few spots. Still a solid team.
15. Texas A&M Aggies- 2 points (Bryan: 14th, K.M: N/R) Last Week- N/R
Bryan: Welcome to my ballot A&M. First week here for you guys. It was a close call between you and Oklahoma for one of my last two spots as Im not dropping anyone else out and right now A&M’s body of work to me is just more impressive than Oklahomas. Add in the fact A&M beat Oklahoma and that made my decision a little easier. Two wins over top of the line Big 12 teams, a good OOC challenge against Arkansas and playing Oklahoma St. tough, both of the last two with Johnson at QB, and you’ve earned my respect. Like I said earlier, though you could end up in a 3-way tie for the Big 12 South, your not going to jump Oklahoma or Oklahoma St., whichever wins, so you won’t be playing in the Big 12 title game, but its been a hell of a ride since Ryan Tannehill took over. And with another year left, assuming he comes back, you guys could be a sleeper team to keep an eye on next year in the Big 12 South. Hard to really fault you for any of your losses. Would like your chances against Mizzou if you played them again tomorrow.
Trending: Up. They’ll scrape the floor with Texas in all likelihood and should get a respectable bowl game to end the year. If there were a playoff system and this team snuck in, who would want to play them right now? Not many teams.
