All Time Mock Draft- Magic Johnson v Kobe Bryant

Posted by on July 23rd, 2012

It’s the greatest internet fantasy geek tournament ever created, and it starts now.  Plus it’s a hell of a way to pass the off season rumor mill and FA period by.

That’s right we have brought to The Sports Headquarters for the first time the All Time NBA Mock Draft.

The basis of the competition is simple, we took every NBA player that has ever laced them up and made them eligible to be in our draft, once the order was determined we went through a 12 round snake style draft that created our teams.

The teams were created with the rules being, everyone plays by today’s NBA rules, all players are considered to have access to the same technology and work out regimen of today.

Once the teams were selected, well that is where we are now, the pool play. In the pool play we take our teams and devise a sort of game plan, based off a combination of game plans, roster, and NBA knowledge you vote for who you think would win our hypothetical game.

In today’s match up we pit two of the greatest Lakers ever against one another in the the All Time Mock Draft- Magic Johnson v Kobe Bryant.

Game Thread.

PG Dan Majerle 32 min
SG George Gervin 34 min
SF Ron Artest 34 min
PF Magic Johnson 37 min
C Kevin Mchale 31 min

Tim Hardaway 16 min PG
Bernard King 14 min SG 14 min SF
Dwight Howard 11 min PF 17 min C

Defense

Jason Kidd: George Gervin. We want Gervin to lay off Kidd and try to get into the passing lanes. If Kidd is behind the 3 point line we can give help a little. Go under screens and force the jumper. Gervin has the length to still contest.

Kobe Bryant: Dan Majerle. Try using ball denial to keep the ball out of Kobe’s hands. Shadow him all over the court never leave him alone. Thunder Dan was a very good defender including making 2 all defensive teams.

Nique: Ron Artest. Go under screens make him shoot jumpers. Play him physical and deny him the ball. Artest has a DPOY and 4 all defensive teams. He is one of the best wing defenders and has the tools to stop Nique.

Rodman/Pettit: Magic. Don’t think these guys will be a huge part of the offense. main thing is going to be to try and keep them off the boards.

Robinson: Dwight Howard is going to get him for 28 minutes and then Mchale will get the leftovers. Howard can run and stay with him off the fast break. Use strength to try and force him out of the lane. Howard is a 3 time DPOY and 5 time all D member he is a great option to throw at Drob.

Miller will see King: We want to hit him every time he comes off a screen.

Everybody else gets matched up by position.

Offense.

This is a great running offense and we want to run every chance we get. Outlet the ball to Magic and Gervin slashes to the bucket for the dish. If not there he curls back out to the wing. Majerle runs to the wing looking for the or else gets to the baseline. Mchale trails looking for the pass back for the jam or the putback and Metta trails looking for a jumper. We trust Magic to make the right pass and if it is open we want him to look for his shot.

We want to run the 4-1 this game leaving lots of room for our athletic guards to attack.

Postups on Jason Kidd if he is on Magic.

Pull Robinson out and let Magic drive to the basket

Run the PNR with Magic an Mchale

Postup Reggie Miller a lot when he is out there on King. We want to kill Reggie on the defensive side

Get the ball into Mchale and let him go to work with his variety of post moves.

Majerle will be outside looking for a bunch of 3 point shots. We assume Rodman will be on him meaning he will be pulled away from the bucket for help defense and will not be close to the basket to get rebounds.

Screens for Gervin to try and free him up for some jumpers. Also a few isos for him. We want to Make Kobe work on defense so he does not have enough energy for offense.

Attack Nique. Make him work defensively as well. Nique was not much of a defender so we want to get his man some looks.

Jason Kidd – 38 minutes
Kobe Bryant – 40 minutes (10 at PG)
Dominique Wilkins – 32 minutes
Dennis Rodman – 36 minutes (16 at SF)
David Robinson – 38 minutes

Rajon Rondo – DNP
Jerry Sloan – DNP
Reggie Miller – 18 minutes at SG
Ron Harper – DNP
Detlef Schrempf – DNP
Bob Petit – 28 minutes at PF
Mark Eaton – 10 minutes at C

Offense:

Today we are going back to the standard 3-2 offense and allowing Kidd to attack. But again the wealth will be spread out to all. We always will work Kobe and Worm on the same side. The idea behind this is that worm was always so active and was great at screen setting and rolling to the bucket with his athleticism. On the other side leave Nique and Robinson. We want to allow Robinson to work the post with his combination of speed and strength. Either of his bigs are in for a world of trouble in trying to guard someone of Admirals caliber. What this does is invite the double, leaving a flashing Nique to either middle or baseline for the cutting 2. This is what will happen after Kidd makes the first move….

Now Kidd will always work the top and always try to look to get to the bucket. If Magic is on him, this is a big win for me. Kidd can get anywhere he wants on the court in this case, and will cause a lot of switch/rotate help plays. This plays into my teams hands with all the scoring and athleticism we have. When the help comes first look is to a drop off to Admiral or Worm for the easy 2. If they collapse, then its the kick out and Kobe and Nique go into their aforementioned plan of attack. What this does is bring a sense of balance to the court, and makes everyone on his team defend. And we know that is not what his team does very well.

Kobe will be in attack mode on his side, hitting the Worm screen hard and aggressive and look to attack at will. If they smother or hedge, Worm has the easy roll for the one handed flush he made with authority.

Petit will fill in for Worm and slot right in, making the pick n roll even more effectivewhile Reggie is on the court allowing Reggie to come off the picks looking to fire.

For Worms minutes at SF, Robinson will move up to the elbow, going into more of a 2 man game with Kidd/Bryant, while Worm floats to strong side baseline at 18 ft. He will look for the back cut layup/dunks as well as crashing the boards HEAVILY.

This game we will look to keep the pace slower, not falling into the trap of running with this team. We are looking for efficient possessions and slowing the pace to keep Magic and his explosive wings from getting into the open court.

Defense:

We are again in a brand of smash mouth man to man defense, playing everyone tight.

Magic: Kidd / Worm – These guys will pick up Magic at half court, and play him tight in his front pocket. They will then drop off a bit at the 3 pt line, playing the passing lanes more than Magics long jumper, essentially keeping him just a little over arms length. We wont leave him, we just wont give him the oppurtunity to bl;ow by us and get to the middle.

McHale: Worm / Admiral – Again we play him tight. We bump him off his line, and make him play to the spots on the floor he doesnt want. If he gets the ball elbow, we force him sideline and baseline, keeping him from getting an open look straight away.

Gervin: Kobe / Miller – Play at arms length. Take away driving lanes and force him into a long range jump shooter. Gervin was so long and athletic that if he got to the key, he was getting the shot he wants. That is our main focus of taking away his strengths. Same technique of sideline and baseline applies here, where help is easier to trap and shut down.

D12: Admiral / Eaton – Length and defensive prowess is used here to take away any comfortability away from Howard, forcing him into tough, contested shots from guys just as big and bigger and just as long and longer. As soon as shot goes up, we find Howard and get a body on him, keeping him off the glass as much as possible.

King: Wilkins / Kobe – Basically play ball deny defense here, and just dont get into bad spots with Bernard. Dude could fill it up himself, so these guys will do as much to prevent him from getting the ball to begin with. Once he has it, play tight underneath him and take away angles.

Artest: Any combo of Kidd/Wilkins/Miller get the call here and play off him enough to let the headcase start jacking up jumpers

Hardaway: Any combo of Kidd/Kobe will play him tight, and force him to the sideline. We want to keep June Bug from getting the open jumper and getting to the middle.

Bellamy: Any combo of Admiral/Worm/Eaton/Petit (whoever isnt guarding the primary post option) and keep Bellamy from that midrange jumper he made so sweet.

Throwing the quick vote here before I head to work

    1) Tfitz the lineup change-a-roo is damn interesting. Love playing versatile guys all over the place. However this doesn’t get you the dominant edge that you would hope, for example like me playing Lebron at PF and letting him dominate =D mainly because the Admiral is athletic and agile enough to not get debacled out there, especially since you say Majerle is looking to get 3′s and little else. Now then if your little dude guarded by a big was cutting and running erywhere this would be a different story =D

    2) Robinson being manned by D12 is a recipe for scoring lots of points. Now then D12 has become a pretty damn good helpside, and PnR defender, but he hasnt had to deal with a guy with a post move arsenal like the Admiral, and he’s especially never had to deal with a guy more athletic then himself before. He may adjust, but I see a rough night to start for D12

    3) Kobe being guarded by the guy that let Jordan average over 40 ppg? Especially when you don’t have a shotblocking presence that could be rough. Not gonna hae Kobe explode for 40+, but Kobe shoots for efficiently then normal on his way to scoring. This is important since Nique has a rough outing against the defense of Artest, but he discovers his dunks a few times here in the forth to help keep the margin

Gonna go with Cain in a tight one here, the breaking and surprise of the Magic man running keeps this game close

    Cain 104 Tfitz 101
    Robinson – 21 points, 13 boards, 3 dimes, 3 blocks
    Kobe – 33 points (13-22), 3 boards, 2 dimes
    Nique – 17 points (6-17), 5 boards, 1 steal

    Magic – 18 points, 12 dimes, 7 boards
    Iceman – 26 points
    King – 14 points

Love the use of Magic. This jumps you right into fast break mode. Problem is he sees Worm a lot I would think with you playing him at the 4. That directly effects the speed of the offense as even if Magic gets the rebound Worm will be near him. But what I do think works to your advantage is the PnX with Magic and Mchale. I think they miscue a few times defensively. I like Mchale and Magic to have decent games. In fact I don’t see anybody breaking out but see many chipping in. That may work well but I have to look at the other side.

This looks like a Kobe fest. I like Admiral to get a little but tough Worm may even score a few. Kidd in this is wasted a little and Nique has a long night. I like Pettit to get a little as well.

    Tfitz
    Dan – 9
Tim – 6 (both pgs score only 3s)

    Iceman – 17
    King – 14

    Artest – 7

    Magic – 16pts 11rebs 10ast

    McHale – 17pts
    Howard – 6pts
    92

    Cain
    Kidd – 6pts 8ast

    Kobe – 45pts 6rebs 5ast
    Miller – 6

    Nique – 12pts

    Worm – 4pts 15rebs
    Pettit – 7pts 8rebs

    Admiral – 16pts

Ugh, this is a tough one…

    1) Magic scores on Kidd, distributes w/ Worm on him, and it ends up being a typical Magic game.

    2) Majerle guarded MJ in the finals… MJ averaged 43ppg in the finals… Majerle on Kobe is going to be similar to the same outcome… Kobe dominates, while Nique is held in check.

    3) Robinson v McHale… This is where the game is won and lost to me…And it really is a coin flip.  Both game planned well here, I like drawing Admiral out, but Cain had a plan for that… Then again that plan was countered w/ the crazy ass lineup.

What happens?  Fitz jumps out to a big lead, and Kobe shoots his team back into it through the 2nd qrt and into the 3rd. Then we get a game of Fitz trying to hold off the inevitable come back as Kidd/Kobe/Admiral begin to pick apart a suspect defense…

Then again I am going to piggy back on what Nugs said… In a 1 game scenario like this, I think Fitz can catch lightning in a bottle and withstand the furious charge that Cain’s squad of stars will put up.

    Fitz- 108
    Cain- 103

By the way, this only happened b/c it was a regular season game.. If this is the tourney, no way I vote that they sneak by…

Dangit Tfitz now I have to think about who guards who for Cain… Making this all complicated and such….

Anyways, I’m assuming Rodman takes Magic at the 4 since he was your second option, Kidd takes Thunder Dan, Admiral takes Mac, Nique takes Artest and Kobe is still on Gervin. Seems logical to me. I’ll give Thunder Dan a couple open looks early with the switch up. Probably gets Tfitz an early lead with the confusion.

Not a huge fan of Rodman on Magic. He can guard him, but that takes him off the boards. But it should limit Magic’s post up game. If he see’s time with Kidd on him that could be nice. Nique is going to get beatup down low by King. Not as bad as Reggie but King should have a good night. Kobe on Gervin is good. In an up tempo offense that Fitz wants to run he’ll get some buckets though. Thunder Dan might get a couple open 3′s early. Artest won’t be a huge factor. Mac takes Admiral out of the paint which is nice. I’d like to see you get him a few more touches in the low post though. That man was unstoppable down there. Scratch that, just read the part about posting him up. Missed that the first time. King kills it off the bench. Howard is probably gonna see some time against Eaton. That’s a big body but Eaton was never a great rebounder.Howard actually could do some damage off those easy putbacks in this game.

Kobe and Worm in the PnR is good. Worm always gets over looked as a screen man but he’d light you up from the blindside every once in a while. He’ll have Magic on him though which should lead to some switches. Kobe should have a nice game in this one. One thing about Kobe, I’d like to see him get the ball in the post every once in a while. Really creates matchup nightmares for other guards. Kidd should have a nice game in this one. He has Gervin on him who he shouldn’t have a ton of trouble taking off the dribble. He’s being played off and Gervin was long but Kidd is just too damn good on offense for the Iceman. Nique has a tough matchup in this one. I think that Artest actually plays him pretty well. Obviously with Kidd creating at a top level he’ll get some easy looks/oops in this game but a below average game. Admiral seeing a mix of Howard and Mac. Decent matchup for him. Both of those guys were pretty good pick and roll defenders though. Admiral should be in for an alright night. Kidd gets him some easy buckets. Off the bench, Reggie is going to have a nice game. If he sees minutes with Kidd getting Gervin, he’s going to get some open looks from deep. I’m saying about 3-4 from deep.

Overall this was a fun game. Some interesting moves for Tfitz should give him an early lead. Magic and Kidd would be great to watch in this matchup. Both have matchups they can take advantage of (Kidd more so than Magic but still). The top 10 will be filled with dimes from these two. King and Reggie both come in and provide sparks off the bench. King gets the slight edge. Howard comes in and has a nice game. Kobe should have a pretty solid game. Admiral and Nique pretty average. Gervin pretty average. Mac pretty average. In the end, I think this game comes down to Cain being able to take the game at his pace due to the rebounding of Rodman and Admiral. Tfitz’s lineup has to depend on gang rebounding which can work but it’s not ideal. That wins Cain a close game here.

    Reasons cain wins

    1) cool lineup my man, joes rollin with it ending up with worm on magic at PF which is a bad matchup for him. Hard to post up on one of the better defenders there was. Pettit comes in and hurts him more with his offense, good pf 1-2 punch.

    2) majerle has tough time checking prime kobe who could hit shots over or around any cat. MWP has to check one of the two and with kobe being the more shooter of the two my man MWP on kobe sounds better. Majerle on HHF would of killed you to bro. Joe knows it’d cool to have two explosive wings.

    3) King does come in an puts a hurtin on millertime, keeps it close cause if that, but kobe in the end pulls the last shot.

    Magic 18pts, 10asts
    Kobe 28pts, 4asts

    Peace

tfitz, are you Faserious?  Wow.  Thunder Dan at point.  King at SG.  And yea, Magic at PF.  Holy crap….lol.  Nobody loves a surprise lineup / gameplan more than me.  Things I really like that would happen here.  1. You would probably build a nice lead to start the game while they are adjusting to this crazyness.  2. McHale will keep Robinson from taking advantage of the plays that Cain has for him, but why only 31 minutes, more of him and less of Dwight please.  3. Thunder Dan was a good defender, but still, Kobe, yea, he’s going to be scoring a few points.  4. King in the game as much as possible is a good thing, but a SG, I mean, I got drilled for having Baylor at SG, and he can shoot.  Yikes, love the effort. Like Mchale on Robinson.

Few things that stand out from Cain.  Kidd is a great defender, but surprised you didn’t factor in some Magic posting up defense there.  You list Word second, but Kidds playing more than Magic, so are we to assume that’s not going to happen.  Or do they split the responsibility?  Tough part of someone like tfitz doing the switchero is does that mean Robinson goes to Thunder Dan, does he slide over to McHale?  I do like the idea of Robinson more on McHale then Worm, just longer and quicker and that helps with all those post moves coming at you.  Better hope that ball denial works to King, because if he gets the ball and starts posting up Nique, you’re in trouble.  The compounding problem here is that King is the backup SG, that should get Miller trying to defend him as well.  King is not a backup SG, no way, but maybe that’s what tftiz was hoping to get, Miller.

7 game series this game goes 5, but this isn’t a series, it’s one game, and this kind of a move would get tfitz the first game win.  With Artest “controlling” Nique, Kobe takes it upon himself to score at will, and he does on Dan.  tfitz wants to run, but with the emphasis on posting up I don’t think it’s going to happen as much, which is in your benefit anyways. As per usual Cain has a solid plan, but just enough crazyness was implemented to counter it nicely.  tfitz gets the close win, Kobe dominates in the loss.
