All Time NBA Mock Draft- Larry Bird v Rick Barry

Posted by on July 2nd, 2012

It’s the greatest internet fantasy geek tournament ever created, and it starts now.  Plus it’s a hell of a way to pass the off season rumor mill and FA period by.

That’s right we have brought to The Sports Headquarters for the first time the All Time NBA Mock Draft.

The basis of the competition is simple, we took every NBA player that has ever laced them up and made them eligible to be in our draft, once the order was determined we went through a 12 round snake style draft that created our teams.

The teams were created with the rules being, everyone plays by today’s NBA rules, all players are considered to have access to the same technology and work out regimen of today.

Once the teams were selected, well that is where we are now, the pool play. In the pool play we take our teams and devise a sort of game plan, based off a combination of game plans, roster, and NBA knowledge you vote for who you think would win our hypothetical game.

In this edition, we get two of the most gifted offensive players ever facing off against one another in the All Time NBA Mock Draft- Larry Bird v Rick Barry.

The man that started the point forward position, versus the man that some consider the greatest legend of the greatest era in NBA history.  They won so much, and now you surround them with even more talent, the possibilities for these two are endless, so let’s see what we have devised for this game.

As always if you would like to follow along in our forums sections, check that out as well.

Offense:

1-4 High

On offense we will be taking advantage of our shooters, athletic post players that can shoot, and the creating ability coming from our point. We want to run a 1-4 high, starting with Kidd setting up all the offense. We will run Larry Bird on the same side with Cowens. They have the ability to be a mean PnR combo. On the other side will Joe D with Robinson. What this does is put a ton of athleticism working the high and low post on the same side with Dumars who was a great spot up shooter. Kidd will initiate the offense up top, peeling off either Cowens or Robinson. First option is for Kidd to attack the bucket if his defender hits the pick hard at the elbow for an easy 2. If Kidd makes that turn and goes to the bucket, both Bigs will crash from the elbow to clean offensive glass. Now if the defender sticks with Kidd, he will kick out to either Dumars or Bird, and then clear through under and out to weakside short corner. The weakside wing will then rotate up top to give an outlet to ball side wing. If it is Birds side, we will set up Cowens in a PnR or PnP on the wing. Bird can come off looking to fire off the pick, or if they over pursue, the easy kick down to a rolling Cowens has easy bucket written all over it. On Dumars side, Robinson will drop to the block, while Bird rotates to top key. This gives me Robinson working low post, and Dumars and Bird as the kick out 3. Kidd will be open on the open weakside short corner for the rotation and open 3 or drive if they cheat and help off.

Miller, Haywood and Schrempf are easily transitioned in to their spots in this offense as their skill set is exactly the same, and in Reggie’s case, its even better and this offense opens thye florr up for more Robinson inside buckets, or Miller 3′s if they help down. Pick your poison really.

Break

We will always look to push on a missed bucket. We arent a running team, so dont get us confused with always running. But on a missed oppurtunity by our opponent, the break is left open more times than not for the ability of getting an easy bucket in transition. Think Spurs of this year and how they always look to make the controlled break on a missed bucket. Its maximizing your oppurtunity. Rebound will always outlet to the lead guard. Good thing about having Dumars at the 2 is he also can run point, so its easy to locate an open lead guard to start. Robinson will always release after rebound up the middle ahead, and Birdman will always leak weakside wing. What we are looking for is either Dumars/Kidd to get out in transition and attack if the option is there. They also have the options of Robinson streaking middle and for an easy dropdown, or Birdman on the skip pass cross court for thye open 3. If the defense is back, we will pull back, and set up our offense and grind them down and get our buckets that way.

Defense

We will be playing a physical brand of man to man defense all 48 minutes.

Tiny/CP3: Dumars and then Kidd when Dumars is grabbing a breather. The idea behind this strategy is to disrupt the flow of their offense as much as possible. We want Dumars and Kidd in their left front pocket, making them work for every inch. The longer we can prolong their offense from initiating, the better chance we have at them forcing up a bad shot. And with Rick Barry, their could be plenty of those. Main idea is to force sideline and baseline, essentially keeping them from the heart of the court where all the action will be.

Hondo/Worthy: This will be Birdman and Schrempf. We want to utilize length and tactics on this matchup. While Hondo was a great defender and team player, his offense wasnt elite caliber. And as much flack as Bird gets for his defense, he was a very good crunchtime and big game defender. And this is exactly what we have here. Bird will use his length and knowledge of the game to beat Hondo to his spot, and make it incredibly difficult to get the shots he wants over the 6’9 Bird and Schrempf. Worthy we will bump off his lines, and not let him get a full head of steam, and play him the same as Hondo, but even more physical.

Barry/Thompson: Kidd / Miller get the call here. What we want to do is just limit the damage here, and the plan on defense earlier set this matchup up for us. Basically freeze out the other guys, and make these guys volume scorers. Yes they will get theirs, but by making them volume scorers, we take away other more efficient options, and this shall lead to our controlled break and easy buckets. We want to play them straight up at arms length, and force them out of the middle at all costs.

KG / CWebb: Robinson and Haywood get the call here as we want athletes and stoppers on these guys, who will more than likely be the first option offensively from the post combo. Now Haywood may not be considered a stopper, but he is definitely an athlete and can hang with either of these guys anywhere on the court. Robinson is definitely what you call a defensive stopper, and has the edge on KG and Webber in everything. Strength, length, defensive ability, defensive prowess. He is the perfect guy to shut down either of these guys, and Haywood is there to just attack the glass against them.

Thurmond / Sabonis: Cowens and Haywood when Cowens is out. The job here is simple. Keep them out of the high post, and dont let them get to the glass. Physical brand of play is what we want here and immediate box out. As long as we keep Thurmond off the offensive glass, we take 8-10 points away from him alone.

In the end, we have more talent across the board, and use it to our advantage in every way possible. 3G has a tough team, but we are hard to beat when we play our game.

PG- Chris Paul (24mins)
SG- John Havlicek (42mins)
SF- Rick Barry (34mins)
PF- Kevin Garnett (38mins)
C- Nate Thurmond (38mins)

Bench

PG- Nate Archibald (24mins)
SG- David Thompson (6mins)
SF- James Worthy(14mins)
PF- Chris Weber (10mins)
C- Arvydas Sabonis(10mins)

DNP- Paul Silas
DNP- Hal Greer

Defense

Jason Kidd- Hondo gets the nod for most of his time, with some of it going to CP3. Hondo was a relentless defender with a motor never seen from the back court position before or since, so he can pressure the ball coming up the floor at times, and then back off of Kidd, remember prime Kidd was one of the worst shooters ever, so we will back off at half court and that allows us to play the passing lanes and cut off penetration.
CP3 should get the rest of the time on Kidd, same defense, never allow him to get uncontested penetration, go under screens and force Kidd to take outside shots.

Dumars- Match up of whoever is not guarding Kidd. If Dumars is their primary offensive weapon we are in great shape. Never help off of him, force him to the baseline and make him put the ball on the floor.

Cowens- Rick Barry gets the nod here; I know what you’re thinking… Barry? Well Cowens will most likely just be used as a screener, mid range post player and someone to crash the offensive boards, so the key is to show on screens out on the perimeter, any underneath screens fight through… DO NOT SWITCH unless it is on Bird at the 3pt line in order to keep him from getting open looks.

Robinson- Thurmond gets him, no help from anyone but Kidd’s defender. Straight up defense, cut him off at the free throw line, force him out of the paint and allow yourself to get help defense without opening yourself up to easy baskets from Robinson. If he is taking shots from beyond 15ft, we will live with the results rather than easy baskets off help from inside the hoop.

Bird- This is obviously the biggy, and it is simple. KG gets him for as much time as he can handle, if KG needs a breather, or a blow defensively, we rotate Hondo to Bird, CP3 to Kidd, and Barry to Dumars.
When KG is on Bird play him tight, force him into hard shots, don’t let him get by you, and always play him physical and punish him when you get beat and can’t recover. If Bird is going to get by you, KG is going to punish him as much as possible.

Bench- Other than Reggie and Rajon we play straight defense here.

Reggie- Do not help off of him, and hit him as he comes through the 700 screens that he will be run off.

Rajon- Play off of him, dare him to shoot, cut off passing lanes and driving lanes.

Offense

Primary Offense runs through Mr. Barry, and we will utilize him in a plethora of ways: From the perimeter, to the low post to the high post, to well everything in between.

Start with getting him into open positions with a screen on the perimeter with CP3 and get the ball in his hands either attacking or creating for others.

Obviously if the lane is there for Paul he takes it and attacks the basket where he has all the options he needs in Barry, Hondo, or KG for open mid range shots or Thurmond down low.

Once we get the ball into Barry’s hands he can take an open perimeter shot, attack the basket and drop the ball to Thurmond, or swing it to Hondo to drive to the basket as well.

We want Barry to be the ring leader and get everyone involved, but if he needs to take over the scoring, he can do that as well.

The caveat… If Dumars is taking Barry, we are going to shift the bulk of the responsibilities over too Hondo, who can control the flow of the offense as well, using the same set up from the beginning.

We also will use CP3 more if Bird is on him… Basically, whoever Bird is on we want to attack more because we want to punish him with screens and make him work on the defensive side of the ball.

Our second option, remember our first option is Barry or Hondo, is KG at the high post if Cowens is on him, or KG on the baseline extended if Robinson is on him.

KG will set a screen on the ball handlers man, and then roll or flair as needed when in the high post.

When on the baseline extended we want to keep him out of the paint and allow him to catch and shoot open shots if Robinson helps on any and all dribble penetration.

When Tiny is running with the first unit for his 14mins or so we want to use him as our primary ball handler and go to more of a dribble drive, with picks offense. The picks can come from the perimeter or from the post players, but we want the ball always moving and always attacking.

Bench offense- With Tiny, Skywalker, Worthy, Weber and Sabonis in for periods we want to attack in transition, and then use our superior passing and athleticism to attack on the breaks.

We want to crash the boards and run with Worthy and Skywalker filling the lanes, and Weber trailing.

If we are stopped in transition we will run a 1-3-1 with Sabonis in the high post and Weber roaming the baseline in order to create more lanes for Tiny, Worthy and Skywalker to attack the rim and use their superior mid range game.

Whoever Reggie is guarding will also be attacking from the wings on the 1-3-1.

Little briefer then my other vote but ehre we go

Cain O vs 3G D – Biggest matchup gamble of the game, Barry on Cowens and KG on Bird. Now then, I take down KG more then anyone else here usually, due to (what I see) as his overrated game, but no denying the dudes mad defensive chops. That said however, when have we ever seen KG take on an elite wing talent? You may say Bird is slow, but Bird still knows the intricacies of getting free on the wing much more then KG. Plus Bird would take KG’s fake tough guy act and straight up clown him on it. Can KG recover with that false toughness and loud mouthed bravado taken down? The other big matchup is Barry on Cowens. At first read I /hated/ this idea, but warmed to it the more and more I thought on it. If Cain had posted up Cowens more, this matchup would have been game set and match. However with Cowens mainly screening, popping, and rolling, Barry has more then enough agility to hedge on those screens if necessary, and follow Cowens around wherever he goes. Cain kept the offense simple, but solidly flowing in this one, with constant motion. Not sure if saying Kidd attacking is the best plan straight up, as sumT will tell you Jason Kidd is the worst offensive scorer ever to lace them up ;) But when driving and dishing few were ever better. Robinson getting matched up one on one is a big win, yes Thurmond is a big boy lock down defender, but the only big man with a comparable athleticism to Robinson was Wilt, and the Admiral had a much more refined game. Should be solid. The breaking stuff, simple, elegant, effective. Much like the Spurs offense.

3G O vs Cain D – Well you get a huge win 3G by having Kidd on Barry. Yes Kidd will make life hell for Barry by sticking to him like glue, but when that shot clock is going down if he has the ball he can rise and fire, make it rain like pacman, score like Wilt with the ladies, etc. The handling of Hondo with Bird is very interesting to me. Hondo is not the main focus offensively, due to the handling of Dumars to the PG and not Barry. So Hondo is at best the 3rd option most possessions, which leads me to think Bird will do more then passably well on him. I personally love Tiny, and with him out there with your starting 5 he should be able to attack at will or dish to an open shooter. The Admiral gets KG, and he’ll show him up close how a professional acts, win or lose. Plus the Admiral bring elite quality defense, and with the Bird man lined up next to him, won’t fail to deliver in the clutch moment. This will prevent Robinson from doing much, if any, help defense, but slowing down the secondary option of an offense should be worth it.

Overall both of these teams are built very similarly, play making 3, great playmakers and defense and the 4 and 5, with versatile guards filling in. Both coaches made some big gambles, with Cain slotting Bird on Hondo and 3G slotting KG on Bird, and subsequently Barry on Cowens. The Bird on Hondo will work better then the KG on Bird, and that’s the biggest deciding factor in this game for me. Barry will get plenty of buckets here with his shooting, but Kidd will prove enough of an irritant most of the time to prevent the primary desired flow from going. Now then when Miller time is on Barry there will be buckets and assists galore, but until then… Bird will punk KG’s false tough guy act, and KG’s frustration with the professionalism and defensive fundamentals of teh Admiral will lead to a far less productive game then 3G desires, leading Cain to a 5 point win, 95-90

    Cain
    Bird – 27 points, 7 boards, 5 assists
    The Admiral – 20 points, 13 boards, 3 steals, 3 assists
    Kidd – 8 points, 13 assists, 5 boards

    3G
    Barry – 35 points, 3 boards, 5 assists
    KG – 11 points, 12 boards, 2 blocks
    Tiny – 13 points, 3 assists

This was an interesting match up to say the least, with some crazy defensive switches(mostly by 3G)  I voted for Cain though, and let me tell you why:

1)Barry on Cowens?- This is a ballsy move, like Ozzie pissing on the Alamo back in the day.  Depending on who looks at it, it could work out like gangbusters or fail triumphantly…for me it’s closer to the latter.  Cowens is going to get some good looks with Barry on him.  Cowens will get some put backs on the glass this way and will probably get some good looks on the PnR/PnP action….especially if Barry switches on to Bird, in which case Bird has the definite advantage there.

2)Barry on Offense-  Trust me I don’t hate on Barry despite 2/3 reasons for you losing come down to him.  Just the way the match ups fell.  Anyway, you want Barry to run the offense which is good.  You also state that Barry can take over the scoring load which is bad.  Not because he can’t do it, but because Cain wants to turn Barry into a volume shooter.  The way it lines up, this works out to your disadvantage.

3)Offensive Game plans- Overall, I Just like the design of Cain’s offense more.  It has a great flow, like a Tupac or an early Snoop.  I like how it gets everyone involved and utilizes your best offensive players best asset….Bird and Passing.  3G, your offense is solid but it kind of bogs down around Barry at times, at least that’s the way I read it, and that will lead to a bit of stagnation.  Not a lot mind you, but a little is more then enough in a close match up.

Man, I didn’t even get to talk about how awesome The Admiral is….next time maybe ;)

    Final Score
    Cain 98
    3G   93
    MVP: Dave Cowens 19pts 11rebs 2asts
    Runner Up: Rick Barry 22pts 3rebs 2asts

    All right here we go.

     Cain’s minutes look
    good. 8-man rotation is fine.

Offense. I like the 1-4 high for your team. Cowens and Bird
PnR will be filthy. Cowens was like a truck rolling to the basket and he’ll
have Barry on him. I don’t see Barry stopping Cowens on those. Should be there
all day long. However, Bird has KG on him who was one of the best PnR defenders
of all time. Going to be tough for Bird to get a lot going scoring wise on KG.
I see him becoming more of a distributer in this matchup. Kidd running the
offense is good. Hondo is on him, which should be difficult, but prime Kidd
could run an offense better than anyone not named Magic. Should do his thing
though Hondo should make him work a bit harder than normal and maybe make him
less effective on the other end of the court. Robinson has a tough matchup in
this game. Thurmond should do a nice job slowing him down. CP3 should also do a
nice job on Dumars. Thurmond and CP3 on the PnR defense should give you a
little trouble as well. Dumars should get some nice lanes to drive though and
when he does beat Thurmond/CP3 on the PnR there is no help with KG being
outside with Bird. Same with Robinson. The break stuff looks good.

Defense- Dumars is fine on CP3. Good defender should make it
tougher for CP3 to run the show. But like Kidd, CP3 is just to dang good
offensively to be stopped. Bird on Hondo is a matchup I’d love to watch. Two
guys who lay it all on the line constantly. 3G wants to attack Bird so Hondo
should get some buckets in this game just because of the opportunities but it
won’t be as efficient as 3G would like. Worthy isn’t getting a ton of minutes,
but if he sees Schrempf and takes him to the post you could see some nice
buckets. Barry as a scorer isn’t ideal. Kidd is a good defender but he’s going
to be working harder than normal on offense already. Tough matchup. Barry
should have a pretty solid night. Defense on KG is good, don’t like 3G’s
offensive plan for KG much either. You’ve got him out of the high post, which
is where he loved to go to work. Does take D-Rob’s help D out of the way a bit
though. Cowens is fine on Thurmond. Thurmond didn’t have a great post game and
cowens never let you get position on him. Should make life difficult for
Thurmond however Cowens doesn’t provide a lot of help D.

Minutes look good for 3G. Might give CP3 more and Tiny less
in the future. Skywalker could use some more minutes. 6 isn’t enough for him to
get going. I might give him or Worthy all 20 minutes.

Hondo on Kidd is good. Can’t stop Kidd from setting up the
offense but you’ll make him work harder and you’ll see more of the benefits
from this matchup when Kidd has to defend. Dumars defense is fine. Play him
tight. He’ll score some off PnR’s though. The Cowens matchup scares me. He’s
going to give Barry fits in the PnR game. He’s just too big and too strong for
him. When he’s in the high post Barry should be alright but those PnR’s could
hurt and Bird is smart enough to keep going to them. Robinson will have a tough
time with Thurmond. Really the perfect defender for him. Bird is obviously
going to score but KG should make him more of a distributer. It does take KG
and his help defense out of the paint though. Not sure about roughing Bird up,
KG can do it but that might just piss off Bird and that’s not what you really
want. Defense on Reggie is fine.

Offense. Barry is the leader got it. He’s going to be a
scorer in this matchup. Hondo should also score for you though maybe not as
efficiently as you would have hoped. Not a huge fan of KG on the baseline. He’s
more dangerous in the high post where he can post up and fade away, take his
man of the dribble or find the open cutters. I understand wanting to take
Robinson out of the middle of the floor but KG’s offense in the high post is
more of a plus to me. The Tiny offense should be fine.

Overall, this will be a defensive game no doubt. Very close.
Bird becomes more of a distributer while Barry is more of a scorer. For Cain
Cowens should be in for a nice night. Dumars should chip in. Robinson same
thing. Nothing great from either of them but not shut out either. Off the bench
Reggie is good for a few 3’s and Haywood should have a ice matchup taking over
for Cowens role. For 3G I think CP3 has a pretty average game. Sets up the
offense but not a ton of scoring. Hondo gets his but not as efficiently as you
want. More just because you are going to him. Barry will drop high 20’s in
this. KG is being used as a jump shooter kick out guy; don’t see him doing a
ton on offense. Thurmond will have a tough time getting position on Cowens.
Tiny will be fine, should score and do well in the dribble drive. Worthy and
Skywalker both don’t give you a ton in this matchup. Webber comes into the KG
role. Same thing would rather see him in the high post as well. In the end this
isn’t more than a 2-possession game and probably goes to OT. As much as it
pains me to vote against my boy KG, I think Cain wins this one due to a
slightly more balanced attack from his offense. This game is probably in the 80’s
scoring wise though if it stays out of OT.

This is a really close game but I think I’m going to vote for cain.

    1. I don’t like KG matched up on Bird. You want KG to play him tight which is fine but I think Bird while not wuick will be able to take KG off the dribble and get his shots. KG is just not used to guarding wings. Plus this will negate KG’s great help D a lot becuase you can’t help off Bird.

    2. I like cain’s bench to produce more with Reggie getting good minutes as well as Haywood. Haywood was a beast that averaged like 30/19 in his prime and 3G didn’t mention him at all in the gameplan. Do not like guys like Thompson getting 6 minutes tough to get into any flow in that short of time.

    3. I think you need to give one PG the lions share of the minutes. Teams usually take on the pace of the PG tough to establish that with 2 guys both getting 24 minutes.

    Robinson 20
    Kidd 10
    Dumars 13
    Cowens 15
    Bird 24
    Miller 8
    Haywood 10
    Detlef 2

    102

    Hondo 15
    Thurmond 10
    KG 20
    Barry 20
    Paul 9
    Tiny 9
    Thompson 3
    Worthy 6
    Webber 4
    Sabonis 2

Two actually very similar teams if you think about it. Both have players at the 1-3 that can handle the ball very well, both in the open court and in the half court. Why on either team it would be very difficult to press one handler, or even try to get a great defender on the true PG. Herein lies why in theory the move of Hondo on Kidd sounds good, but I personally would of just rather seen your PG on Kidd, be it Tiny or CP3. You don’t have to worry about a prime Kidd shooting all over the place, especially from deep. Their both so fast they could easily keep with them, and try to get into those passing lanes for a quick steal. Then have Hondo on Bird, which you did have when KG is needing a breather.  KG is a great help defender, and I would rather see him put in that role.  No doubt he could guard Bird though, but not a fan of trying to rough Bird up.  Last thing you want to do is get him mad, he actually enjoys that and somehow even steps it up a notch.  Plus, boy, aren’t you worried about getting him in foul trouble.  Cowens is a guy I like in this contest that doesn’t get much respect.  The first team I took over had Cowens as the PF, and I saw quickly how little love he got, and ironically traded him to axe for KG.  Back to the game here though, one thing that really stood out to me is Thompson only getting 6minutes.  I lineup that I would of really liked to of seen is Barry dropped down to PG and let him cover the PG, DT at SG, let him cover Dumars or even Miller, perfect for both since they couldn’t drive on him with his speed, and he’s got such a great leap he could disrupt outside shots, Hondo at SF, let him deal with Bird, then bigs on bigs.  Get that lineup out and running since they all could very easily and boom, run up some points.  Everyone on here thinks that I like Thompson so much because he was a Nugget, but it’s more than that.  He was unstoppable on offense, no one could, he was the best scorer in the league, don’t let Gervin’s theivary of the scoring title sway you.  Even though Worthy somehow in that lineup, heck even at PF for a small strech to really go after him.  Probably would rub some people the wrong way though.  But you catch my drift, either play Thompson more or just bench him, those 6minutes could be over a couple of stretches, then he’s really useless.  Get him in, give him time, and let him looose.  The guy could do more than just dunk, he was good even with his mid range jumpers.  Anyways, was something I was hoping to see and was disappointed that I didn’t.  Something as simple as that would of made me vote for my favorite player ( Thompson ) over the best player ( Bird ).  But the moves went in the other direction and I don’t think it achieved what you wanted.  Easily a game that goes into overtime though.  Cain wins by a nose, maybe even a nose hair.

  • Biggy

    I vote for Cain:

    1) His offense is just so well rounded and executed that it would take the best defense ever to slow it down. Love the 1-4 high with this team and allows his guys to get buckets from all over the floor. When Miller is in, he’s going to be scoring quite well as I assume Hondo will be on Kidd as much as possible, so that leaves CP3/Tiny and Skywalker to guard him. He’s going to excel in this offense and with the type of defenders on him.

    2) Larry Bird will outplay Rick Barry. It would have been closer had they actually guarded each other, but I don’t like KG on Bird. KG is an excellent post defender and is very athletic, but that doesn’t translate to handling a guy like Bird that has the ball-handling game, perimeter shooting, and overall ability on the perimeter. Especially running through the 1-4 offense getting lots of strong screens from Cowens that KG will have a hard time fighting through and giving Bird plenty of good looks.

    3) The lack of defensive planning for Cain’s bench guys, specifically Miller and Haywood. I’ve already went over Miller, but I didn’t see Haywood’s name mentioned once by 3G, how he was going to defend him, or who was going to defend him. Webber/Sabonis would have a hard time straight-up on him and he would be able to put up some points in his 24 minutes (half the game and no plan for him?).

I liked what 3G did by putting Hondo on Kidd and slows down Cain’s offense some and makes Kidd’s day harder, but with guys like Dumars and Bird that are very able ball handlers/distributors it’s not a huge blow losing Kidd’s playmaking. I think the biggest factors are out of the two stars, Bird wins that matchup (Kidd’s better suited to guard Barry than KG is for Bird) and then Cain’s bench provides a strong spark and those give him the edge in this game to get the win.

Cain would have liked to see Kidd be more of a focus… Hondo is a beast but so is Kidd and he doesn’t just score… i know you give him run but seem to relinquish at the mention of Hondo… even if say Hondo is being wasted by having Kidd in the corener he is still doing his job if Kidd isn’t getting the majority of the ball duties… your overall flow is good but with a large array of options, you kinda leave it up to me as opposed to giving me a solid plan… Cowens would have killed  Barry and will still give full value but he could have been big… not sure how i feel about the Bird situation… KG is a beast and his strength defensively could def give Bird problems, but maybe Bird could have forced foul trouble…love Admirals play should do well…defensively solid except for Miller and Schrempf…could hurt some…

3G love the gambles defensively but it is tricky…like Barry getting a lot of touches but Kidd does pretty well…KG doesn’t do much but like the offense when you use the play making point guards and attacking Reggie and Schrempf plays well…

both used benches well and made this an overall tough call…

    3G:

    CP3 – 8pts 10ast 3stls
    Nate – 10pts 5ast

    Hondo – 10pts
    Thompson – 4pts

    Barry – 18pts
    Worthy – 10pts

    KG – 12pts
    Weber – 6pts

    Thurmond – 15pts
    Sabonis – 5pts

    98

    Cain:

    Kidd – 10pts 6ast

    Dumars – 11pts
    Reggie – 9pts

    Bird – 19pts 7ast
    Schrempf – 3pts

    Cowens – 21pts 13rebs
    Haywood – 8pts

    Admiral – 19pts 10rebs

    100

in the end Cains overall offense is just a little more fluid to me with more options…i think Barry on Cowens was just too much…Cain by 2…

    BUC’s vote

    3G wins and here’s why:

Clipped wing – I know Bird isn’t as bad a defender as he sometimes gets hated on in this contest, but I think the way he defends Barry and the way that Barry is being used (primary option with another note about “throwing relentless screens at Bird” is a great plan. I also like the KG defense. I value KG more than most in this contest and actually have him as the best PF of all time. Big early KG fan and his D with 3G’s o-attack will give Bird some problems. Not stop him, but slow him down and Barry has a big game

Cain’s offense – This isn’t why 3G wins, but I do want to say I love your offensive plan and the set you use and the motion. Very simple yet extremely effective with great spacing and very easy to visualize. I think this has the potential to be a higher scoring game than people anticipate.

He’s just a child – Like Joe, I really love the move to put Hondo on Kidd. I think it’s a matchup that works across the board and will cause some turnovers in Cain’s offense that end up deciding this game. Kidd can’t get by him or overpower him. Great matchup.

Both teams had a very strong game plan and I like both teams. As I’ve said, this is the most balanced ATMD I’ve been a part of and all of these votes will be hard.

    3G – 97
    Cain – 92

MVP: Rick Barry – 30 points, 6 assists, 5 boards
Honorable mention: Larry Bird – 20 points, 10 boards, 7 assists
    DPOTG: Garnett – 16 points, 9 boards, 3 blocks, 2 steals

Couple reasons joe picked 3Gman to win in a real close match against the cainman.

1 liked the move of hondo on kidd, that dude is great at setting up the offense but someone like hondo going to clog the lanes and get some steals.

2 worthy can be successful vs. Detlef who’s gonna have trouble when he’s in transition.

3 cowens could have a good game with barry on him, and ticket could be getting in foul trouble pestering the birdman. But in the pnrs like ticket there.

2 stud teams, could if gone either way.
    Peace
