2013 NFL Draft grades- The Troegenator Double Bock

Posted in NFL No Comments »

I started off my draft “grades” by handing out 15 Chimay Blue drafts, representing teams that I thought had great drafts.

In the scope of things that matter, anyone’s opinion on a draft class falls near the bottom, but all of us that put the time and effort into analyzing the draft want to let you the fans know what we thought of your team’s draft.

Today’s installment is that of the good drafts, or The Troegenator Double Bock.

It’s a really good beer, one that you have when you’re out with friends at the bar, looking to enjoy yourself.  That’s what you get in this draft, a good draft, it’s something that should inspire a good feeling, and something you should look forward too, and in some cases it can be great, but it didn’t quite make it to that Chimay level.

Let’s get into my 2013 NFL Draft grades.

2013 NFL Draft Grades- The Chimay Blue’s

There’s nothing better than the NFL Draft, it’s a yearlong process that culminates in three days of excellence, and then you get back to it again.

This is my draft “grades” and obviously if you follow me on Twitter @SethCoxFB, you know I despise grading the draft.

It’s a time for optimism and coming out and criticizing a team’s draft without having seen a prospect play a single down is just so odd to me.

That means I’ll do it my way, which I have always, and break my “grades” down into three categories:

The Chimay Blue- This is a great draft.  Not something that you get all the time, unless you’re the Ravens, and it’s a special.

The Troegenator Double Bock- It’s a really good beer, one that you have when you’re out with friends at the bar, looking to enjoy yourself.  That’s what you get in this draft, a good draft, it’s something that should inspire a good feeling, and something you should look forward too, and in some cases it can be great.

The Cheap American Beer- Hey it’s still beer.  It still enjoyable, it still accomplishes your goal, and you still end up having a good time, even if you wake up the next morning not feeling great.

(Thanks to
for the beer suggestions)

Arizona Cardinals Big Board Day 3

Posted in NFL No Comments »

We’re three rounds in, and the Cardinals have taken the prospects I ranked at the 9, 28, and 94 slots on my Cardinals specific billboard.  They went two picks higher with Cooper than I had him slotted, but his scheme fit in the Cardinals passing game makes a ton of sense.

In the second round the Cardinals were able to get my 28th rated player at the 45th pick in the draft, while also gaining an addition fourth round selection.

In the third round they added Tyrann Mathieu, my 94th overall player, at the 69th pick.  There isn’t anything wrong with adding a player of Mathieu’s caliber; he has the ability to play in numerous roles on the Cardinals defense, and will be utilized in that way.

The little problem was he was taken a little early for me, but his versatility is amazing, and that makes it okay in my mind.

I did not remove players that have already been taken at like positions, but the reality is you move up players that fit into needs more as long as they are close on the board.

Here are the remaining players left on my Arizona Cardinals Big Board Day 3.

You know what was fun about round 1?  The Cardinals turned the draft on it’s head by taking a guard in the top ten, and breaking decades of tradition to bed.

You know what wasn’t fun?  Watching Geno fall, but from everything I’ve seen and read he’ll make a note of this on his way to making teams pay for passing on him.

That also means Geno remains on my 2013 Arizona Cardinals Big Board, this time taking the top spot.

My rankings are specifically for the Cardinals

2013 NFL Mock Draft

Posted in NFL No Comments »

Typically I add my predictions mock to what I like to call my “What I would do” 2013 NFL Mock Draft, but you can find that at Arizona Sports.  No, this is more about acting like I am actually in charge of each team, and picking the person I think would be the fit for the team.

What would I do for each team?  Glad you asked, here is my 2013 NFL Mock Draft.

1. Kansas City Chiefs- Star Lotulelei, DT Utah

Adding Alex Smith puts a slight damper on what I would have done to begin with, which was Geno.  I still think Geno makes sense, but with no second round pick, I would have the Chiefs take the most impactful defensive player in the 2013 NFL Draft.

2. Jacksonville Jaguars- Geno Smith, QB West Virginia

One of the few picks that will match up in my two mocks, I love the idea of the Gus Bradley and Dave Caldwell era beginning with a potential franchise changer at the most important position on the field.

3. Oakland Raiders- Barkevious Mingo, DE LSU

The need of a pass rusher, and the best one in the draft?  Yes please.

2013 NFL Draft Miami Dolphins team needs

2013 NFL Draft Miami Dolphins team needs

The Dolphins spent wildly in free agency in the 2013 off season in order for Jeff Ireland to give himself a shot at retaining his job past the 2013 season.

Well, ask the Tampa Bay Buccaneers how well that works?  Winning free agency does not guarantee short term success, no matter how much your team spends.

However, drafting well can often put teams on the right track in terms of building, and help teams that are close, like the Dolphins, in turning the corner.

2013 NFL Draft Buffalo Bills team needs

What could the Bills be looking for on draft day?

Here is my list of 2013 NFL Draft Buffalo Bills team needs and a couple prospects that could fill those needs:

Wide Receiver- Tavon Austin (8), Quinton Patton (41), Robert Woods (41), Justin Hunter (41), Da’Rick Rodgers (71)

The Bills need weapons in Doug Marrone’s new offense.  While Cordarrelle Patterson could be an option at eight, I can’t see him going that high.

Linebacker- Kiko Alonso (71), Sio Moore (71), Sean Porter (105), Zavier Gooden (105)

The Bills need athletic linebackers in their defense.

Kevin Kolb’s fit with the Bills

Posted in NFL No Comments »

Most know of my undying love for Kevin Kolb the player.

Well undying may be a bit strong, but he was the best quarterback on the Cardinals roster for two seasons, and it was never more apparent than the last ten games of the 2012 season when the Cardinals tried and failed three times to find someone, anyone that could replicate what Kolb was doing to start the season.

Now Kolb is heading to Buffalo, where he will compete for the starting job with Tavaris Jackson and likely a rookie quarterback, to be the Bills signal caller in new head coach Doug Marrone’s Frankenstein West Coast offense.

Can Bills fans expect anything other than a few flashes of good, some bad and then a season ending injury?

What does Kevin Kolb bring to the Bills?

Let’s take a look at Kevin Kolb’s fit with the Bills.
